British Columbia came in strong as AVA’s second tournament of the 2026 season, with more than 7 out of every 10 matches ending by submission across regulation and overtime, totaling 71.6%. No-Gi youth led the way at 72.7% in regulation, followed by Gi youth at 59.2%. On the adult side, Gi came in at 56.1% and No-Gi at 51.3%.
By category, youth edged out adults with a 64.9% regulation finish rate compared to 53.1%. Rise and Throne Qualifiers topped all divisions in submission finishes, with Rise No-Gi delivering a perfect 100% in regulation and Rise overall at 92.9%. The Throne Qualifiers weren’t far behind at 70%, a strong showing from athletes competing for their spot on the path to Throne.
Referee decisions came in at just 1.6%, continuing last year’s trend and one we expect to hold under 2% as the season progresses.
No-Gi divisions showed slightly higher regulation finish rates across both age groups, while Gi produced more overtime escapes.
BC set a high bar for the season ahead.
