2025 AVA Western Submission Grappling Stats

June 8, 2025 AVA

The highest submission rate in regulation were in no-gi youth divisions at 68.2%, followed by gi adults at 63.2%. Both of these rates were higher than those in the Throne Qualifier. Overall, adult divisions led with a 62.5% submission rate in regulation, followed by youth at 60.6%, and pros at 54.2%.

While Throne Qualifiers had the lowest regulation submission rate, they had the highest submission rate in overtime compared to adults and youth. In gi pro matches specifically, submissions in overtime were twice as likely as winning by fastest escape.

In gi adult matches, submissions and fastest escapes in overtime were nearly equal, at 16% and 17% respectively. No-gi youth and no-gi adult divisions were slightly more likely to be decided by fastest escape in overtime, by margins of 3.8% and 3% respectively. Gi youth had the highest rate of fastest escape outcomes in overtime, with escapes occurring more than twice as often as submissions.

Notably, there were no referee decisions or disqualifications in any of the Throne Qualifier matches.

In conclusion, over 60% of all matches ended in submission during regulation, confirming that the majority of competitors are still getting the finish. Referee decisions remain extremely rare at under 2%, and disqualifications are below 1%. Interestingly, this was the first time youth and adult divisions slightly outperformed Throne Qualifiers in regulation submissions—showing that more matches outside the Throne Qualifiers are both striving for and achieving definitive finishes in regulation.
