Nearly 4 out of 5 matches (78%) in AVA Okanagan ended in a submission, and two-thirds (67.7%) were finished within regulation time. Overtime added another 10.2% of taps, while overtime escapes decided 15.7% of matches. The remaining 6.3% ended by walkover, referee decision or DQ. Across the whole tournament, the numbers were remarkably steady, with youth (81.1%), adult (78.8%) and Okanagan overall (78%) landing within a few points of each other.
The Throne qualifiers set the standard. Every single match ended in a submission. The gi qualifiers were all tapped in regulation, while in nogi, two-thirds finished in regulation and the rest were settled by a tap in overtime. Nobody left a Throne qualifier match without someone getting submitted.
The Rise Elite Youth qualifiers were a little different. Rise finished 61.5% of its matches by submission, with 53.8% coming in regulation and 7.7% in overtime. Nogi came out ahead of gi at 64.7% versus 59%. The other big factor was overtime escapes, which decided nearly 1 in 5 matches overall and more than a quarter of gi matches (27.3%). That kept the submission rate lower than the rest of Okanagan, but it also shows how competitive those matches were.
The youth and adult divisions held steady right around the 80% mark. The biggest difference showed up in overtime, where youth matches were more than three times as likely to end in a tap as adult matches (12.7% versus 3.8%). Nogi also produced more submissions than gi in both youth and adults, with youth nogi finishing 83.6% of matches by tap versus 78.9% in gi, and adult nogi at 80% versus 77.2%.
Overall, the numbers back up what a submission-only format is meant to do. Throne qualifiers finished every match, the general divisions consistently landed near 80%, and even the lowest group, Rise, still saw submissions decide more than 3 out of 5 matches.
